This series contains copies of outgoing letters which concern primarily administrative matters. Included are requests for authorization to expend money; statements of money spent; acknowledgments of communications received; and letters concerning food, supplies, equipment, and personnel, particularly resignations and recommendations for hiring. This series includes letters originated at the Perris Indian School, 1898-1902 (predecessor to the Sherman Institute). Included in the first volume are several letters relating to the establishment of Sherman Institute, an off-reservation boarding school in Riverside, California.

The Sherman Institute was established in 1900, as a successor to the Perris Indian School (Perris, Calif.), after the water supply to the previous school was deemed insufficient. By 1901 a site in the city of Riverside was selected, at the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Jackson Street. On July 19, 1901, the cornerstone was laid for the new school building of Sherman Institute, and the school officially opened on September 9, 1902.
